On Day 12 of my 13 Days of Halloween I’m sharing the artistry of Amanda Chapman of Amanda Chapman Photography for some creative Halloween makeup inspiration. When I first became familiar with Amanda’s work, I had no idea she’s an Alabama girl, residing in Florence. Amanda is a self-taught makeup artist and in 2012 began a self-portrait series that she dubbed the 31 Days of Halloween.
The project, which sprung from a need to direct attention away from her husband’s cancer diagnosis, quickly grew into an internet phenomenon. “Literally on a whim I started each day in October doing a different makeup and then posting it on Facebook,” Amanda explained. “The original inspiration was to turn a bad situation into something beautiful. It gave my husband and kids something to be excited about again.”
Although Amanda was born on Christmas Day, Halloween is her favorite day of the year. The following images are from 2014 series and the results are spectacular. You can review her Facebook page here to see the 2015 characters.
According to Amanda, her first year was very spontaneous, “I had no idea from day to day what character I was going to do”. With the projects success, currently there’s is a lot more planning involved. As for the makeup, each character generally takes two to three hours to complete and Amanda’s favorite brand of makeup is Mehron. She also uses other products such as BenNye white foundation, Urban Decay liquid eyeliner, and Sclera contacts, and Mehron’s SynWax.
Going on her fourth year this Halloween, Amanda continues the project for her family and fans. She has compiled an ongoing list of requests from fans on Facebook and likes to draw inspiration from Tim Burton. In fact, when asked about her favorite character to date, she says it has to be Edward Scissorhands from the 2013 series because she loves the movie and is a huge Johnny Depp fan.
