Our family participated in the 15th Frantic Frog Triathlon this weekend at Goose Pond Colony in Scottsboro, AL. The Frantic Frog is hosted by the Scottsboro TriSports Club as a sanctioned fundraiser for the Jackson County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
The race begins with a 400m swim, followed by a 24k bike, and ends with a 5k run.
This is one of my husband’s favorite races and he has done a masterful job of recruiting his siblings to participate on an annual basis; not a small task since they are scattered throughout the US. This year he hit a record with eight recruits, including yours truly.
For those of you who know me personally, to say that I’m not into exercising is an understatement. After much ridicule disguised as encouragement, and to support the family and Red Cross, I reluctantly agreed to be on a team with my son’s girlfriend and her mom. Since swimming and running would likely kill me, or induce a coronary, I agreed to take the bike leg.
Collectively, we had four individual competitors (Tim, Steve, Allyson and Mason) and two teams (the Crazy Cougars and the GoGoGirlz). My two sisters-in-law, Janet and Nikki, comprised the Crazy Cougars and Lori, Sarah Lauren and me were the GoGoGirlz.
Although rain was forecast, the day couldn’t have turned out better. Although a little cool starting off, it warmed into the perfect autumn day. The backdrop of Goose Pond Colony on Lake Guntersville was picture perfect.
The GoGoGirlz got off to a great start thanks to Lori’s rock-solid pace in the swim. Since I haven’t ridden a bike, not to mention for 15 miles, in almost never, I slowed our pace significantly. Sarah Lauren was a real trooper and put on the afterburners for the 5k. Our motto was, “Completers. not Competitiors” and complete we did!
Here we are at the finish line…oh, the thrill of victory!
And for the history book, both the Crazy Cougars and the GoGoGirlz finished in the top 5 women’s teams! The Crazy Cougars edged ahead of the GoGoGirlz, so they deserve a pat on the back. I’m not going to mention there were only 5 women’s teams registered.
One of the best features of the race is the awesome food the wonderful volunteers prepare for the contestants. I have heard tales about the jambalaya for years but finally got to taste it. Here’s a photo of Steve enjoying his.
Here’s a couple of more pictures post race to serve as a reminder to get in lose weight and get in shape for next year!
Hello to Lori and Sara Lauren from The Ludwigs. Small world 🙂
