Live Pumpkin Topiary using Real Miniature Pumpkins

Following the success of my easy Halloween Pumpkin Topiary, I decided to try a “live” version with real miniature pumpkins. Using the Williamsburg Apple Cone and miniature varietals such as Jack Be Little, Small Sugar or Baby Boo, I crafted a thrifty Thanksgiving centerpiece that is both beautiful and unique.

Miniature varieties are perfect for incorporating into the topiary since they are roughly the size of a large apple. I got mine at Walmart in the produce section.

To begin, I used the same Williamsburg Apple Cone form and ceramic cake plate as before.

First, I made a magnolia wreath base  using dwarf magnolia leaves glued to a paper plate. Although this isn’t necessary, it does give the topiary a more finished look. The topiary is much easier to move if the magnolia leaves are glued.

Next, push the miniature pumpkins onto the form trying to leave as as little space possible between each pumpkin. The outer skin of the pumpkin is really tough, so if you have trouble pushing the pumpkins into the metal supports, feel free to use a rubber mallet. Just be careful not to puncture your hand!

I used one of the larger size pumpkins for the top. If you see large areas of space, don’t fret; I’ll use filler to cover them later.

Place the form with the pumpkins on the plate with the magnolia ring.

Next, place your choice of “filler” into the open spaces. I used Arizona Cypress and Ligustrum cuttings from the yard. For a southern theme, I’d like to incorporate real cotton bolls; of course, other colorful foliage such as leaves or Nandina will also work.Live Pumpkin Topiary using Real Miniature Pumpkins_mySweetHomeinAlabama

This was a really easy project and makes a great presentation for a centerpiece, buffet or any where you need a touch of fall!
